Visiting the grave site for the Nihiras in Tokyo
First of all, find your way to Tokyo. This can’t be that hard as any travel agent in the world can do that for you. Then you need to start at either of the following train stations.
JR Shinjuku Station
This is one of the largest train stations in the world so be very careful not to get lost in here. Be especially careful if you lock up your luggage in a coin locker. You may not find the locker again if you don’t recall exactly where you left it. One nice thing about Shinjuku is that all the maps have names of the cities in english. So reading the map is possible for us English speakers.
You can take the Chuo line from here (Chuo trains are orange). Take it West (nishi in Japanese) toward Musashi-Koganei. If you end up on an express train, you may need to get off at Mitaka since I don’t know whether the express stops at Musashi-Koganei. Anyhow, get off the train at Musashi-Koganei. Once in the station, ask or find the Keio buses. Take the buses toward Chofu.
Sangen-jaya
This is the town where Izumi currently lives. She lives right above the Shin-Tamagawa line station called Sangen-jaya. But to get to the Ohaka, you will have to cross the street to the Carrot tower, the tall orange building. Essentially you go to the other side of the building and look for a very quaint streetcar-like train (I think it’s called the Setagaya line). It’s a very old single car trolley kind of like the San Francisco cable cars. It's wooden and really old so it goes slow. But it's quaint! Anyhow, you take that from the Carrot Tower (start of the line) to the Keio line station Shimo-Takaido (end of the line). From here, you want to get on the Keio line west toward Chofu. Chofu is a pretty big station so even express trains will stop there. Get off the train and go look for the Keio buses. They are found in a circular turnaround by the PARCO department store, so you could just ask for that. Take a bus toward Musashi-Koganei (we took bus 91).
Tama-Reien Uramon
If you want to make sure you get the right bus, ask the driver if he will go to Tama-Reien Uramon. That’s the cemetery we’re looking for. Be sure to get off here. The Uramon part means that we want the back entrance. Walk toward the cemetery.

On the right side of the entrance to the cemetery is a store conveniently selling flowers and incense. Go buy some flowers, incense and get a bucket of water to boot. Be sure to get a lighter or something to light the incense. This is the store that watches the plot in the cemetery so you can even ask them for directions at this point. The plot is in the area officially described as 13 ku, 1 isshu, and 17 gawa. |

Walk into the cemetery and notice all the cars with drivers sleeping in them. Walk straight back. You should walk straight through two circular drive areas.
Follow signs in the pictures as indicated.

If you can, try to quickly clean up the plot area, like removing excess moss or pulling weeds. Poorly kept cemetery stones are kind of like saying the family doesn’t care.
Light the incense and put them into the holders as shown. Offer water to the top of the headstone and then bow and pray.
